EQUINE-ASSISTED SERVICES

What we offer

CTRH offers a range of equine-assisted programs that promote physical, emotional, and cognitive growth. Whether it's building confidence in the saddle, engaging with our miniature horses, or supporting literacy through reading programs, each service is designed to meet individuals where they are—with care, expertise, and the healing power of horses.

Adaptive Recreational Riding

Our adaptive recreational riding program is taught in small group lessons (2–4 riders) by PATH Intl. certified instructors. Each rider is supported by a horse leader and up to two side walkers. Riders may begin at age 5 and continue into adulthood.

Rider weight limits:

  • Balanced riders: up to 175 lbs

  • Unbalanced riders: up to 150 lbs
Determined at the discretion of the instructor or therapist.

This is an 8-week program (no single-ride sessions). Each 1-hour class includes grooming, tacking, mounted exercises and games (30–40 minutes), and post-ride care. The full experience is designed to be engaging, educational, and multi-sensory.

Hippotherapy

Hippotherapy is a treatment strategy that uses the movement of a horse as part of a licensed occupational or physical therapy session. Recommended by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and guided by trained therapists, hippotherapy supports patients as young as 2.5 years old in improving balance, coordination, strength, and sensory processing.

By incorporating equine movement into a larger plan of care, therapists provide targeted neuromotor input that supports functional outcomes like walking, talking, and attention. Sessions are offered as part of an 8-week commitment and follow strict safety and eligibility guidelines, including a rider weight limit of 175 lbs. for balanced riders and 150 lbs. for unbalanced riders.

Miniature Horse Outreach Program

Not every client can make it to the barn—so we bring the barn to them!

Our miniature therapy horses—Graham Cracker, Tater Tot, and Mocha—visit schools, care centers, and community programs to share the healing power of horses through calm, meaningful interaction. These outreach sessions promote emotional wellness, comfort, and connection, especially for those who may not otherwise have access to Equine Assisted Services.

Visits typically last 45–60 minutes and are tailored to meet the needs of individuals or small groups.
